How do I create a Cascading Metric?

Cascading metrics allow you to cascade metrics out to the team, so individuals can own a fraction of the overall target.

Multiple metrics can roll up to one overall metric. This is achieved with the creation of child metrics that roll up to a parent metric. You can cascade down three tiers.

Cascading metrics allows for the summation or average of child metric's actuals and target data, as well as the ability to have different owners of child metrics. This allows you to further increase accountability. For example, each member of your sales team can own a piece of the overall sales team target.

When creating a cascading metric from the start, first add the parent metric and do not add targets or actuals at this time. The parent metric needs to be a blank metric as it pulls the actuals and targets from the child metrics.

Once you've added the blank parent metric (image: red box 1), next navigate to + Add Child Metric (located below the metrics table) and click add (image: red box 2).

From the Add Child Metric pop-up window (image: red line 1), title the metric (image red line 2). Please know, the remaining information is copied from the parent metric for Frequency and Type of metric. Next click Add to save.

Below the parent metric, you will now see a chevron (image: red arrow 1) to expand the cascading metric and to see the child metrics below (image: 2). At this time there are no targets for the parent metric, the target is empty for the quarter (image: red arrow 3).

Once the structure of the cascading metric is set-up with the child metrics, next add the targets to the child metrics which will roll-up to the parent metric (image: red box 1, 2, 3).

The cascading metric is now complete in set-up. The actuals need to be entered into the child metrics which will cascade into the parent metric. The same applies when viewing cascading metrics from the Rolling Metrics page, the actuals and targets needs to be entered into the child metrics.

To create a cascading metric from an existing metric that already contains actuals and targets, you will need to create a new parent metric first. Then next link the existing metric(s) and any other new child metrics to the new parent. Once it is complete in set-up, the team members will continue to update the metrics they own which will cascade into the new parent metric.
