Swimlanes, Sprintlanes, Annual Priorities, and Quarterly Priorities: What’s the Difference?
Metronome has several modules for planning and tracking goals at different time horizons. This article explains what each one is for and how they fit together.
New Addition: What are Sprintlanes?
Sprintlanes break a priority down into a 13-week sprint, so you can track progress week by week. They let you compare the Actual percentage completed to the Target Pace, and they are intended for the Company Priorities that matter most to the business.
The four modules at a glance
Metronome has four modules for planning at different time horizons, each with a specific purpose tying into completing your 3HAG.
| Module | Time horizon | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Swimlanes | Multiple years (12 quarters) | Planning the big milestones for each Differentiator, to reach your 3HAG. Often created in planning meetings |
| Annual Priorities | One year | Priorities linked to your Differentiators, to reach your 1HAG. These are created from your mapped Swimlanes |
| Quarterly Priorities | One quarter | Priorities with clear owners, for all individuals. These often are linked to Annual Priorities and the milestones mapped out in Swimlanes. |
| Sprintlanes | 13 weeks | Tracking weekly progress on the most important priorities (Company). |
Swimlanes
Swimlanes are a 12-quarter visual roadmap, used for long-term planning over multiple years. Each lane shows a stream of activity running across the quarters, mapping the milestones and capabilities needed in each one. Swimlanes help you break down your 3HAG (3-Year Highly Achievable Goal) into actionable priorities.

Annual Priorities
Annual Priorities are where you build out the priorities that support your 1HAG (1-Year Highly Achievable Goal). They come from the longer-term plan in your Swimlanes/3HAG.

Quarterly Priorities
Quarterly Priorities can be built directly under your Annual Priorities and support your QHAG (Quarterly Highly Achievable Goal). Each priority can have Sub-Priorities (weekly sprints), owners, start and end dates, and linked Action Items, and its status color updates automatically based on pacing against the dates.
Individuals can also create Quarterly Priorities that are not related to an Annual Priority.
Timeline View: To see your own priorities in a timeline layout similar to Sprintlanes, toggle on Timeline View on the Quarterly Priorities page.

Sprintlanes
Sprintlanes are intended for Company Priorities specifically, not individual Priorities, unless an individual owns a task under a larger Company Priority. They break down the Priorities that matter most to the business, such as reaching a profit goal, into a timeline view.

How they connect
- Your 3HAG is broken down in Swimlanes.
- Your 1HAG is built out as Annual Priorities.
- Your QHAG is built out as Quarterly Priorities, directly under the Annual Priorities.
