How do I use the Function Chart?

A tool for clarity, alignment, and accountability in your organization.

The Function Chart (also known as the Function Accountability Chart, is a powerful tool to define what your organization needs to be great at and who is accountable for each function. It gives you a high-level map of responsibilities across the company so you can identify gaps, avoid duplication, and ensure strategic alignment as your business grows.

Why the Function Chart matters

  • Clarity and Accountability
The Function Chart visually defines each major function in your business and assigns a single owner. This reduces confusion and makes accountability crystal clear.

  • Identifying Gaps and Overlaps
Seeing all functions in one place makes it easier to spot areas where no one is accountable—or where too many people are. That insight helps eliminate inefficiencies and missed responsibilities.

  • Strategic Alignment
When you know who owns what, and those roles are aligned to company goals, your team can move faster and focus on what matters.

  • Quarterly Review
As your company evolves, so do roles. That’s why it’s best practice to review the Function Chart quarterly to keep it relevant and aligned with your strategy.

Using the Function Chart in Metronome

In Metronome, the Function Chart can now be found in the left-hand navigation under Function Chart.

To make changes:

  1. Click Edit in the top-right corner.

  2. From here, you can:

    • Add new functions

    • Remove existing ones

    • Reorder functions based on business structure

Each function should have a clearly defined owner—someone ultimately accountable for that area.

When to Set Up and Review the Function Chart

The Function Chart is typically created during the early stages of strategic planning or when defining a company’s organizational structure. It often forms a key part of kickoff meetings or annual strategy sessions, where leadership aligns on who owns what.

  • Kickoff Meetings
The Function Chart is often developed during kickoff meetings as part of the strategic planning process. This is when the team identifies critical functions and assigns accountability to drive clarity and alignment.

  • Strategic Planning Sessions
It may also be created or refined during strategic planning sessions when long-term goals are being set and the right structure is needed to support them.

  • Quarterly Reviews
As a best practice, the Function Chart should be reviewed every 90 days to ensure it reflects the current reality and supports your evolving strategy.

  • High-Growth Scenarios
In high-growth companies or during major transitions, reviewing the Function Chart more frequently (e.g., monthly) helps maintain alignment as things shift rapidly.

  • Strategic Meetings
Leaders may also revisit the Function Chart during strategic meetings to adjust responsibilities based on internal or external changes.

Regularly updating the Function Chart keeps your organization agile, focused, and clearly aligned around who owns what.
