What Are the Best Practices for Cascading Metrics?

Cascading metrics allow you to roll up individual metrics into a larger parent metric for better visibility and accountability.

1. Use the Same Metric Type

All child metrics linked to a parent must be of the same type—Count, Measurement, or Flat.

2. Select the Right Roll-Up Type

When creating a parent metric, choose a roll-up type:

  • Summation adds all child metric values together.

  • Average calculates the average across all child metrics.

3. Use a Blank Parent Metric

A parent metric must not contain its own data. It pulls values exclusively from its child metrics. If your existing metric already contains data, it cannot be converted into a parent. In this case, create a new blank metric to serve as the parent.

4. Set Targets in the Child Metrics

Targets must be set in the child metrics, not the parent. Targets for the parent metric will be calculated automatically based on the selected roll-up type.
